We have always offered cabinetry painting, and did so on site. Now we are able to offer a perfect, smooth, HVLP sprayed finish on door and drawer fronts !
Our zero dust, temperature and humidity controlled spray shop is the new "Bees Knees" at Brater Painting LLC.

Painting cabinets opens a world of decorating options. Natural wood is beautiful, but after years and years, many people prefer to make a change. Often this is associated with other Kitchen upgrades, like new countertops and tile backsplash. Even alone, as a single upgrade element, painting Kitchen Cabinets can offer a completely new and modern look to the kitchen.

Our Tech... The nerdy stuff.

The most important part about painting cabinets is the correct preparation, and choosing a primer and finish system that will withstand many years of use. We use a very specific type of primer and finish, which is also proprietary by our custom addition of extenders and hardeners. Our primer is the leading brand of fast dry oil based bonding primer. We have tried them all, and this one offers the bonding and adherence needed to lock the performance coats on top of it. The performance top coat is an Acrylic Alkyd. Remember learning that oil and water does not mix ? Well, brand new technology means that now, they do mix. This means the end result is the best from both the water based and oil based worlds. From the water based side; the low or zero VOC  (Volatile Organic Compounds), fast drying, non-yellowing over time, and ease of application. And from the oil based side; leveling (smoothness of the finish), and final hardness and durability. We apply two coats of Acrylic Alkyd on top of the bonding primer for a colorfast, smooth, and extremely durable long lasting finish. Kitchen cabinetry is one place where using an inferior coatings system will show up as peeling, gumming, chipping, and visible handling residue in very short order.

Our procedure

• On day 1 we number the doors and drawers fronts, indexing them to their respective openings, and remove them. The cabinet boxes are then cleaned with ammonia, sanded, and then wiped with denatured alcohol to remove dust and oils. The boxes are caulked to the wall on the ends for a perfect transition with no gaps. The boxes are then primed with a microfiber roller. The doors and drawer front are loaded and taken to the spray shop to be prepped the same way, and then sprayed with primer.
  
• Visit 2 includes sanding the primer, wiping with denatured alcohol, and then applying the first coat of Acrylic Alkyd finish paint with a microfiber roller.
  
• Visit 3 includes lightly scuffing the cabinet boxes, wiping them down, and then the application of the 2nd final finish coat of Acrylic Alkyd.
• Visit 4 is returning the finished doors and drawer fronts and installing them. Transformation complete !

Custom Decorating Options

We offer nearly any solid color choice, in any sheen from Satin, Eggshell, Semi-gloss, or Gloss finish.
We also offer custom faux finishes and glazing. A popular finish is the Farmhouse. This finish utilizes a colored glazing in the routed angular recesses in the doors and drawers fronts, as well as on any coping or top crown molding on the upper cabinet boxes. This creates a dynamic yet subdued three dimensional effect. The glazing is applied in the same fashion as another motif called the Urban Stripe. The Urban Stripe produces a clean, consistent, full color line. To create the Farmhouse, each freshly applied line is then hand rubbed to create a lightly distressed and worn look to those recesses. To the right is an example of the Farmhouse. (At the top of this page is the upper portion of cabinets from this same job) The cabinets were natural oak. The color chosen was an off white in semi-gloss. The Farmhouse glaze accent color is a charcoal black. Rustic matching door handles and drawer pulls were chosen, which we installed.
